One thing I enjoy is the
cycle of fishermen who come
to fish the waters of Granite
Hill and Obakamiga Lakes. |

When I was in my teens in the early eighties, I noticed a class of
fishermen who were very hearty and nothing kept them off the
lake, and alongside some of them was a young boy or girl who
would soon find out the joys of catching walleye in the rain.
I always wondered if these kids would keep fishing for the
rest of their lives.
Twenty years later some of those same boys and girls still visit
us as adults, and some of them
bring their children, too, enjoying
the same quality time and fun
as their forefathers.
We would like to thank all
our guests, the seasoned and the young, for visiting us over
the years. |
Last Season
Spring arrived right on time last year and by May 5th the ice
was gone, and the fish were spawning. The conditions remained
mixed with cool temperatures and the odd snow shower until
the second week of the season. Temperatures remained steady
in the low seventies for June and July with a lots of early morning
fog in August and September. Overall the summer offered
consistent fishing conditions. |
Angling Awards / Drawing Winners
This year’s Master Angler awards go to Fred Marion for a
45 inch Northern Pike and to Kyle Bonnell for a beautiful
31 inch Walleye.
Our winners for this year’s drawing are:
Buck: John Momper from New Haven, Michigan
Bingwood: Grant Klembara from Dallas, Texas
Granite Hill: Matt Cregg from N. Muskegon, Michigan.
Each winner is entitled to a week housekeeping trip to any
camp of their choice. |
The Fishery
Finding the walleye this past season took a little more effort
than usual. For the past two seasons the water tables have been
a bit lower than usual and water temperatures a little higher.
This year, however, the water level was back up and the temperature
was down, thanks to six weeks of rain from June into early
July. The end result was that most of the walleye were caught in
20 to 25 feet of water and the quality of fish was in the 20 to 25
inch range. Very few “eaters” were caught in the deeper water
leaving the evening bite to fill take home and shore lunch
quotas in shallower waters.
Pike, on the other hand, were plentiful in any of the shallow
weed beds in Buck. As long as your bait had a red and white
color combination everything from bucktails to stick baits
worked well in weedy bays to deep water. |
Slot Sizes for 2008
There will be no
changes next season
to the slot
sizes for the Granite
Hill and Obakamiga
Lakes. |
Border Crossing Information
For 2008 current travel documents required to regain entry to
the U. S. will stay in place. (Valid Driver’s License and Birth
Certificate).
A Passport is required for all air and rail travel outside of the U.S.
In 2009 passports will be required for all traffic – air, rail, bus,
and car. |
The Air Service
We will continue to provide reliable, safe air transportation.
With the high cost of insurance we could no longer afford to
operate the Otter aircraft.
We sold the Otter and
acquired another Beaver
aircraft so next season we
plan to operate two Beavers
and possibly a Cessna 185
to maintain the same
quality of service for all
who visit our camps. |
Hunting Adventures
Bears, Bears, Bears!
If you stayed at Granite Hill Resort this past year you know
what I mean.
For our guests who chose to hunt black bear with us in August,
we had plenty of bear activity providing great bow hunting
opportunities and many successful hunts.
Hopefully the spring bear hunt will start up again next year.

Moose!
Calling in a 1000 pound animal within fifteen yards for a clean
bow shot is no easy feat. A couple of hunters this season did
come close, but our final score was zero for four. That leaves
plenty of animals for next year. |
